IMAS offers national, regional and local opportunities for competing in various arts and categories, including traditional forms, free-style weapons forms, tournament point sparring, stick sparring, board breaks and more. Competitions are open to students at IMAS member schools and are a great way for martial artists to level up their training.
Traditional forms put the Art In Martial Arts. This is where you can truly showcase your ability to perform a routine of moves with the grace and power of a martial artist.
Flag Sparring is a fast, high energy competition that demands quick feet, rapid reactions and elusive movements. The thirty second round speeds by as opponents attempt to steal each other's flags without losing their own.
Point sparring combines the fun and excitement of the sport with applying practical application of many of your techniques. Quick thinking and reaction speed will help you score points, evade your opponent and strategize your way to victory.
Board Break Challenge
The board break challenge is for anyone who really wants to challenge themself! Open all day, you have the opportunity to perform your strongest breaks and attempt to win gold!
White, Yellow and Orange Belt students compete with one step style sparring combinations. This competition acts as a precursor to Point Sparring for our beginner competitors.
Weapons competition is an incredible way to showcase your personal talent and creativity. Your form can be built entirely from your own mind. You have the opportunity to figure out what flows, what feels good, and what moves make you the most competitive.
Padded Stick Sparring
Score as many points as possible against your opponent with a padded stick. Not only should you be quick, but you should also be smart. Defensive strategies are just as important as fast-paced combos.
Tag Team Sparring
You and your friends work together to defeat teams from different schools in a tag-team-style sparring match. All teams must have at least three people, and can be made up of students of any rank. Males and females can be on the same team, but teammates should be of similar age.
Demo Team Competition
Demo Team competitions are one of the most exciting, inspiring parts of our Spring Nationals weekend. Students collaborate for months to prepare a performance of fight scenes, weapons demos, board breaking, traditional martial arts and XMA. It's an all out battle of school spirit to see who will be crowned the newest Demo Team champs!
